Strive for Five: Why China Continues to Dominate Globally

As promised, I’ve decided to upload the 5-page paper I wrote on my study abroad experience in Beijing and Shanghai. Reflecting on my trip, I didn’t fully realize how much I actually learned about China, most specifically how its Five Year Plan impacts its business environment. A special thanks to the Kenan-Flagler Business School, Dr. Paul Friga, Mrs. Leslie Melton, and Mrs. Angela Dickerson for coordinating everything so well and giving me the one of the best opportunities of my entire life.

The paper can be found by clicking this link:   China GIE 2012 – Myles J. Robinson

China in Pictures

So I apologize for not updating my blog like I thought I would…turns out WordPress was blocked just like Facebook and Twitter. I would have liked to blog about each day individually, but that would just take too long unfortunately. Plus I’m writing a 5-page, single-spaced synthesis paper in the coming weeks, so I can post it on here later and elaborate more on certain aspects of my study abroad experience.

In short, our visit to Beijing and Shanghai was a great mixture of work and play. Our days consisted of a 2-3 hour visit to a Chinese business, lunch and a mixture of free time, sightseeing, or a second company visit in the afternoon. At night, we were always free to do whatever we liked, including a little dancing at the Great Wall :)

Below is a photo slideshow of some of the pictures from my trip. The rest of the photos are on my Facebook album, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” Enjoy!

Here Goes Nothing….

So, I’m going to officially be in Beijing, China in a little over 24 hours (I already know this 15+ hour flight is already not gon be the business but whatever). One phrase to describe my emotions right now: Blessed and HIGHLY favored. I’ve never been so scared yet incredibly excited in my entire life. I’ve been trying to play like this trip isn’t going to be a big deal, but it’s slowly but surely starting to set in. I’m about to have the experience of a LIFETIME in the #1 business capital in the entire world as a rising sophomore in college. God really works things out for the good of those who love him.

My Aunt Roxie put everything into perspective yesterday when I called her to wish her a Happy Mother’s Day. She told me, “Myles, by the end of your trip, you would have done more traveling than some adults do in an entire lifetime. When you get older you’re going to have a really interesting story to tell your children.” I don’t know if she was referring to the miles or just the big significance of China globally, because I’ve only been to Costa Rica before this trip. But I guess it doesn’t matter. Her point was probably in the latter statement. Story.

When I hear that word I think about making my Heel Print. That phrase is tossed around so much at UNC, but when I sit back and reflect on freshman year, I can’t help but wonder what my story is gonna be come senior year. By August I would have traveled and studied abroad twice, successfully finished my freshman year at the school of my dreams (literally), become President of the Carolina Sport Business Club, and completed an internship with the Charlotte Bobcats….all before my sophomore year? Seriously? And I don’t say any of that to brag I promise. All of that is a testament to God having a divine plan for my life and letting me walk in the direction HE has planned for me….nothing else. But seriously, all that is CRAZY for me to even think about, and I’m the one that would have done it. Honestly, this time a year ago I was simply happy just to be going to UNC. I’ve literally wanted to go to Carolina ever since I was 6 years old, and I not only go there but I’ve had all these experiences as a result of just being there for one year?? I really can’t see what God has in store for me in the future.

Just like Costa Rica, this trip to Beijing and Shanghai China will be sponsored through the Kenan-Flagler Business School. Shout out to KF, seriously. They’ve been absolutely amazing to me during my first year at UNC. And a special thanks to Mr. Mur’ray for exposing all of us in the assured admit class of 2015 to these wonderful opportunities. I’m truly blessed to be around great people who genuinely want to see me succeed in all my future endeavors.

It’s currently 1:29am and my flight leaves from here (Atlanta) to Newark, NJ in 4.5 hrs. I fly out of New Jersey and head to Beijing in about 11 hrs. I’m SOO excited!!! A lot more to come in the next 14 days as I spend 7 days in Beijing and Shanghai, respectively. Looking forward to learning a plethora of international business knowledge, playing basketball (y’all know I had to bring my red Nikes lol), doing some great shopping (Mom, I promise you’ll get your Louis Vuitton purse when I come back), making new friends abroad and within our KF group, and visiting the Great Wall of China!

Until next time,
